Do you want your computer always run as fast as the first day you brought it? Computer can run as fast as the first day you own it. It should last until the physical parts wear out. That is 5 to 10 years. Take care of following two things, every one can do it.
Hardware, this is an important part but was ignored by many. The main goal is to keep it cool. Computer parts wear out fast when it is too hot. It will burn down the computer if it is too hot.
What make your computer get over heated? It is dust. Dust is every where no matter how hard you fight against it. Couple years after you brought it, internal parts of computer are covered with dust. It likes a coat in summer. Burn down your computer in some extreme case. What you can do? Get a professional guy, or a handy man, open the case, take it out side and blow with compressed air. Once a year maybe good enough depend on.
Software, it is a topic I can talk for hours. Given 5 minutes, I will just list something which is most important. Computer runs as many programs as we want at same time. Well, each computer has a physical limit. When I am type this article in word program, I thought word program is only program running. No, that is not true. There are a lot more programs are running. They are MSN, Yahoo messenger, Antivirus software, dictionary etc. Did I turn on those programs each time I turn on my computer? No. These programs are start by themselves.
One time, I have a friend asked me to fix his computer. Turn on his computer. I found 75 programs are running. 15 of them are essential. Other 60 are not needed actually. I just get ride of those 60 programs. Restart the computer and it works. He thought I had been smart, but actually, just turn off some unnecessary programs.
3 rules stop unneeded programs. 1) When you install software, do not install anything you do not wanted. Like flash, Google tool bar are bundle together. Uncheck it if you do not need it. When open a webpage, popup tells you that your computer infected with virus or spy ware. Ignore it, a webpage are not able to detect your computer virus.
2) Some programs like MSN and Yahoo messenger have an option to start automatically. If it is not really needed, turn it off.
3) Constantly check your running program and make sure turn off all unneeded programs and keep your computer clean.
In a nutshell, in order to keep your computer problem free, keep it clean, hardware and software.
