Purpose of this article is trying to help most people make their computers faster. Read carefully, you may use those tips all your life. I have been make living as a computer technician in Toronto Canada. My job is to fix those computers which had all kinds of problems. Most of problems can be avoided if you have some simple habits. So there are some basic but important rules we can follow to make our computer robust. Avoiding problems like slow down or personal info being stolen will be discussed here. Believe it or not, a lot of IT professionals are having problems with their computers as well. OK, here are some rules. 1) Stop unnecessary processes This is the most important. And it’s the first suggestion popup in my mind. If there are unnecessary processes running such as MSN or Yahoo messenger, stop them if you did not using it. Most of them are started automatically when you turn on your computer. I have a customer having 87 processes running as soon as the computer start up. after I stop all of them and restart his computer, his computer just run as fast as a new one. You may use this skill to impress your friends. I am writing a small software to help you easily do this, and will let you download it soon it is finished. 2) Keep check the current running processes stop unnecessary programs is a good practice for the best performance of you computer. You may develop a good habit to check your current running processes. How to check the current process. a) press and hold Ctrl keyboard button and Alt keyboard button and push Delete button. Select “Task Manager” if you did not got the task manager window. Go to the process tab. You will see a list of running process. Some process are needed for the windows system. Others are not needed. b) Right click the task bar at the bottom(usually it is there unless you changed it.), select the “Task Manager” option on the popup menu. After you know what are processes currently running, you can check document to know which are essential process and which are not. You can terminate the process there. Play around, you will be a guru later regarding performance tunning. 3) Check your disk or hard drive or some one call C: D: etc. After you remove programs startup and stop unnecessary programs, your computers CPU and Memory are in good shape. It is time to check the hard drive. Go to C: drive and check the free space of it. Right click the c: drive and select the properties in the popup menu. You will get a window, read line by line and it is telling you how big your drive is and how many been used and how many still available. Rule of thumb is you need keep at lest 10% of free space. I usually keep more than 30% space free. If you have other drives like D: E: etc. check them as well. Well, you do not need to check the network drive.
